Historic Places in João Pessoa
The historical downtown of João Pessoa has an important archaeological site. The Capital City of Paraíba is one of the oldest in the country, founded in 1585, more than 420 years ago.
Hotel Globo

Inaugurated in 1929, it was the scenery of important social and political happenings of the city. Important guests were hosted here, as the president João Suassuna. From its gardens, one can see a beautiful view of Rio Sanhauá. Located in the historical center, it is one of the places that the visitor cannot miss.

Casa da Pólvora

Casa da Pólvora is a beautiful historical monument built in the XVIII Century. It is a place that the visitor cannot miss. Apart from its historical meaning, the landscape seen from here is really breathtaking. In this building, there is also a photographic museum, called Walfredo Rodrigues Museum, and a bar. The museum is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Anthenor Navarro Square

The beautiful and colorful front walls of old buildings are what call the attention in this square, but the charm of this place is not only under the daylight. In the evening, tables and chairs are put on the sidewalk and this place is transformed inviting the visitor to have a cold drink and enjoy music presentations that happen in the open air. 

São Francisco Church

These two building are part of the historic and cultural site of João Pessoa. This monument was declared by the National Institute of the Historic and Artistic Patrimony of Brazil as one of the most important cultural legacies of the baroque architecture and art of the XVIII Century. Wood worked and covered in gold, frescos with religious motives, furniture made with jacarandá and Portuguese wall tiles can be found here. It is open to the public from Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 to 11:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00.

Nossa Senhora das Neves

The building was first constructed in 1586. Altogether, it was rebuilt three times; the present building was made by the Vicar Francisco Melo Cavalcanti. Its towers and roof can be seen from different places of the city, it's a beautiful landscape. It's also very beautiful when the church is illuminated during the celebration of marriages.

A beautiful corner that maintains since the XVII Century its neogothic characteristics. The front of the house covered with Portuguese wall tiles is a picturesque sample of the historical architecture of the city.
The city, apart from beaches, is a good option to the ones who is interested in culture and history.
